Do you feel like you have tried every diet that exists without success? Did you lose a lot of weight only to gain it back on shortly afterwards? Or perhaps there is just too much going on for you right now and it’s difficult to “diet” on top of that?
Here are the two biggest secrets of the weight loss industry.
1/ The first battle is in the mind, but it’s not what you think.
There are many people, primarily those who have never struggled with their weight, who would think that overweight people are just lazy and overeating. This is just plain false. I have been overweight myself, while exercising and cutting my food. However, the mind is indeed where it happens first. Here is what to do:
- Build a strong motivation. Obviously, the road ahead involves some effort. So, I want you to imagine the best you that you can be. What will you do when you get the body you want? What will be your life like, what activities will you be able to do, what sort of friends will you have? I want to build a strong mental picture of this future you, and remind it every day.
- Clear out the trash. By that I mean all the stress, anxiety, trauma you may have. Comfort eating is a real thing, and telling somebody “don’t comfort eat” is not going anywhere. You have to go to the source of it. What is causing it? What can be done today to address the stress or anxiety in your life? On top of that, a chronic stress and anxiety load will mess up your hormones, boost cortisol and eventually lead to belly fat accumulation.
- Build healthy habits that you will enjoy. Find a sport you will definitely like – if you don’t like running on a treadmill, then don’t do it. Build some form of mind-peace practice, there again that doesn’t necessarily involve sitting in the lotus position. Go to bed earlier. Did you know that the sleep hormone melatonin gives fat burning a good boost?
2/ It’s not only how much you eat
The myth of calories counting has today been debunked. Yes, calories matter somewhat, but the body is perfectly capable of adjusting to more or less energy. If you starve yourself daily, your body will start switching off systems that aren’t essential right now – heating up your body, detoxing, processing thoughts, etc.
Fat loss and fat gain are driven first and foremost by hormones. The main fat-storing hormone is insulin. The main driver of insulin is dietary carbohydrates. In other words, every time you eat sugar, pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, fruits, beans, etc, you create fat-storing hormones. If you eat many small meals throughout the day, you will have a constant supply of insulin. The thing to do is to then eat low-carbohydrates, and eat fewer meals during the day.
In some cases, other medical factors can lead to weight gain. Some medications, and generally inflammation are important factors that could contribute.
